Murder Rates in Australia:

  • Australia: 1.50 per 100,000 people
  • Melbourne: 7.40 per 100,000 people (Source)

Murder Rate Comparisons to other Countries:

  • United Kingdom: 1.41 per 100,000 people

Due to many press reports comparing India to Australia recently, I have also included this comparison:

Murder Rates in India:

Nationally:

  • India: 3.44 per 100,000 people

New Delhi:

  • New Delhi Murder Rate:  83 per 100,000 people

Number of Murders in 2008: 251
Population: 302,363

Melbourne murder rate per capita of Indians.

Melbourne had an Indian population of 50,686 as at 2006

Assuming that the normal average of 7.4 people per 100,000 population were murdered each year, there would be between 3 and 4 Indians murdered each year, on average, in Melbourne.

One murdered Indian per year would give a 1.97 per 100,000 rate. (Lower than Melbourne’s average)
Two murdered Indians per year would give a 3.95 per 100,000 rate. (Lower than Melbourne’s average)
Three murdered Indians per year would give a 5.92 per 100,000 rate. (Lower than Melbourne’s average)
Four murdered Indians per year would give a 7.89 per 100,000 rate. (Higher than Melbourne’s average)

The population of New Delhi isn’t 302,363. (how did that get past your sanity checks?)

Its 11 million. Source: searching Google for “population of New Delhi” gives this as the first link:

So your murder rate for New Delhi

So the murder rate comes down from 2.27. Three times better than Melbourne.

The population figure was from the source shown in the article. However, I have double checked and found the following:

New Delhi, the national capital, had a population of 302,363 at the last census.

Delhi the State in northern India, had a population of 12,877,470 at the last census.

The above figures from the Indian Government Census website : http://www.censusindia.gov.in
